I bought this Apple MacBook Air 2017 as my first major investment by my own earning over the last two years by working for Sportskeeda and the Bridge over the last two years. I had always wanted to experience an Apple Product at its fullest and after going through all the positive and negative reviews on the Web, I finally decided to gift it to myself on my 19th Birthday. After more than a month’s use, I would like to compile a brief review to address the issues and the benefits of the device as follows :
BUILT (4/5)
The device is made of premium aluminium which gives a very sleek look. The display is thinner than a one rupee coin which makes it exemplary, given the model was first introduced in 2010. Gives a very premium feel which a Windows Laptop can never give you at around 50,000 INR. he Apple Logo does rest of the work. However, the Bezels are very wide which impacts its look when you use it.
The bezels are a typical 2010-styled one which is a big deterrent to its otherwise premium look. However, many Windows Laptops still give such wide bezels which is not a very big problem.
The keyboard has a very feathery response and when you type with the keys, the feel is very satisfying. The keyboard is backlit as well giving you the ability to work in extreme dark as well. The charger has a magnetic slot which does not allow the adapter to come off easily.
It is one of the very few laptops which you can actually use it as a Laptop. Don’t get what I mean? The Laptop weighs less than a kilogram making it extremely handy in travel. You can literally use it in a subway, train, car, bus or even an autorickshaw. Still don’t get what I mean? Read on.
DISPLAY (3/5)
The display is not a 1080FPS Display ranging 13-inches. Not one of the very good displays in the same value in the market. Does not have hue optimisation in its angular coverage. One has to view the screen at an exact angle to get the best colour. However, the lack of hue optimisation does not affect very much if you are getting it for personal use. 4K Video Editing will not work due to the lack of exact colours of the screen.
PERFORMANCE (5/5)
What shall I say about the performance? No comparison to any of the laptops in the current price in the market. Despite the 8 GB DDR3 RAM, it works better than many of the Laptops in the same range with better DDR4 RAMs in the market in 2019. One would wonder how Apple pulled such a brilliant execution in 2017.
The 128 GB SDD and 1.8 GHz 5th Gen i5 processor certainly complements the brilliance of the Apple masterclass but it stands out its performance. You can have 12 tabs open on the Safari, use Photoshop, edit on Final Cut Pro, write numerous documents at the same time and you will not see the slightest of lag. If you want an extremely smooth transition between apps and programs, this Laptop has to be one of your top choices. The Laptop also seldom heats up.
OPTIMISATION (5/5)
Now coming back to using it as an actual Laptop as I mentioned in the very first part, I would like to bring up the optimisation part. As it runs on MacOS Mojave, the latest MacOS version, it can be used exactly like your mobile phone. In other Laptops, if you close the lid and keep it on, use it after some time, the battery life falls significantly, the apps are killed on its own and the system starts lagging. On some other occassions, the system has to be restarted.
Well, that is not the case with piece of beauty. You can literally close the lid, leave your work midway, and open the laptop after 1 week, the MacBook resumes exactly at that point with the battery dropping a mere 5%. The optimisation is so on point that the Video Editing App for Mac, FinalCut Pro does not even have a save button as you never need to save your work. Everything get saved to the system as you do your work.
The touchpad is one single button with advanced gestures. You do not need a mouse at all as the touchpad can do everything on its own with just a few tweak in finger slides.
The touchpad is one single button with advanced gestures. You do not need a mouse at all as the touchpad can do everything on its own with just a few tweak in finger slides.
BATTERY LIFE (5/5)
Just like the exemplary performance, the battery life is one of the best any device has to offer. The manual says 14 hours play-back time and they are not bluffing at all. If you surf, work, binge and listen to some music, the device will easily give you a 12-hour play-back time at a stretch of continuous usage.
Hence, as I said, this is a device, you can actually as a Laptop. Charge it up and go away for a day and use it all you want. You still come back home with more than 1/3rd of the power.
STORAGE (3/5)
The device has a 128 GB SDD making it a very small-scale device in terms of storage. With the system taking up more than 30 GB itself. The usable storage you have in-hand is around 90 GB. So, it is not a device where you can keep tonnes of movies and series to bing watch later on. However, it has a thunderbolt slot which no laptop provides you in this range. A thunderbolt hard disk just acts like an internal hard drive making it not so big a problem. An external SDD also solves this issue first hand.
COMPATIBILITY (3/5)
The MacBook is one of the most compatible Apple computers in the market. If you compare it with the new MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro in the Indian Market, you will find the 2017 edition the most compatible computer if you are a hardcore Windows user like me. (I have been using Windows since 2005). It has two USB Slots, one audio jack, one Micro and Macro SD slot. Seldom do any Apple MacBooks have so many slots. However, the MacBook 2017 is a very incompatible device in respect to Google Android and Microsoft Windows as expected.
Half of the Windows Apps will not work on the device. The USB devices need to be formatted in exFAT format to be switched efficiently between Windows and Mac as NTFS or FAT32 will not work on both the devices. Connecting your android device to the desktop is a very difficult task. You need third party apps like HandShaker to share data. However, Apple provides an application called Boot Camp where you can use a Windows OS on your Macintosh device efficiently.
As far as Gaming is concerned, you should not think a tad bit about the same. To be frank, Apple has not made this device for the purpose of gaming. 90% of the games will not be compatible and the ones compatible will run very slow and will not be a pleasant experience at all.
FINAL VERDICT (8/10)
So, after weighing the PROS and CONS of the device. I would rate it as one of the top models in this price tag. For swift personal purpose and professional work, the device is an absolute steal with a top-notch performance and optimisation. However, if you want to play games and do 4K editing on the same, just forget this device. I am not a coder myself, however after talking with other Techies, I have found out this device is one of the best for Web Development and Coding. This is my first major investment I have made with completely my own earnings over the last two years by writing on Indian Football and I can proudly assert that I regret not one bit by getting the MacBook 2017 and I think you should too!
